About the type Prima

Prima was conceived for learning to read and to write. The type was designed by Titus Nemeth (Wiener Schriften) and Martin Tiefenthaler (typographische gesellschaft austria/tga). It was commissioned by the Wiener Bildungsserver, an association of the city of Vienna that aims to facilitate media competence amongst children. The fonts are licensed with the open-source license CC BY-NC-SA 4-0, making them freely available for non-commercial use. The most recent version can be obtained from GitHub, where also the sources can be accessed.

Use and distribution

Prima will be introduced to teachers in cooperation with the Wiener Bildungsserver and other supporting institutions. Workshops will be offered to teachers, demonstrating the didactic and ergonomic advantages of Prima. To facilitate its adoption in teaching, supporting material will be developed and made available free of charge.

Technicalities

The Prima font software is available in the OpenType format, making it usable on all current platforms: Windows, MacOS, Linux, Chrome, iOS etc. However, as various application offer different degrees of support of the OpenType format, not all functions are available in every setup. Since applications keep getting updated regularly, we advise to query developers about the offered level of OpenType support in their products. As can be seen on this website, Prima is fully functional in current browsers.
